FIRST AND TEN
by Nancy Zamastil
My fourth grade gym teacher,
left quite an impression on me.
She had a passion for football,
that as girls we just couldn’t see.
“If its 3rd and 9, to keep the ball,
should the quarterback throw it or run it?
If he throws the ball and it’s caught in 8 yards,
will his team then have to punt it?”
“See, the players have numbers on their shirts,
to show the position they play.
If a player’s shirt says ‘64’,
what part will he play that day?”
“We need to know how the game is scored.
What will a touchdown be?
An extra point is one, a safety is two,
a field goal will always be three.”
This is how my gym class went,
every other day.
But I can watch a game now
and I know every play!
Coach Cannon had passion,
she loved her football games.
She would’ve been a great teacher at church,
with questions not quite the same:
“How many disciples did Jesus have.
that helped along the way?
How can we best be his disciples,
in the modern days?”
“Your attitude and spirit
can show what part you play.
The ones showing through right now,
do they say what you know they should say?”
So you want to earn some points with God?
You say, “How is this done?”
He loves us unconditionally…
He gave His only Son.
We can always count on God’s love
even when we mess up and sin.
Repent and remember, He’s always there,
and ….YOU’RE ALWAYS AT FIRST AND TEN!
